Studio portrait of two women posed standing, wearing hats and gloves.

This image is part of a collection of over 6,000 glass plate negatives created by Charles J. Van Schaick. Van Schaick learned the art of photography after moving to Jackson County, Wisconsin. In 1885, he opened a studio in Black River Falls, Wisconsin and served as the town photographer for over 50 years. His work includes both studio portraits and richly varied and intimate snapshots of small-town, Wisconsin life. A portion of his photographic work is represented in Wisconsin Death Trip by Michael Lesy.

These are apparently the British chapters of the Red Hat Society though a lot of them seemed to be American. Who knew there was a Red Hat Society anyway? [Update: Apparently there were Red Hatters from all over the world here including the founder Sue Ellen Cooper]

I had a terrible sunburn in London, so I had to buy me a hat. Guess who’s wearing it mostly!? ;-)

This photo was taken at the Paddington Station in London as we waited for Pam, a friend of Monika.
It is not a strobist shot. Just lighted by the "natural" London street lights.

I’m teaching a Basic Beanie crochet class at the local yarn shop. There is one student who asked if she/we could do an Ear Flap hat… So I altered the pattern to make it possible!

Finished it up tonight, for tomorrow’s class. I love this yarn: handspun, kettle-dyed, super-soft wool…

whaddya think?
